Therapy for Children

Childhood is full of growth, but it can also bring real emotional challenges that are hard for kids to name and even harder for parents to navigate alone. At Bhava Therapy Group, our therapists work with children to build emotional awareness, strengthen coping skills, and create a space where they feel safe to be themselves.

What Is Children's Behavioral Therapy?

Childhood, roughly ages 4 to 12, is a period when children are still developing the language and self-awareness to understand what they’re feeling, let alone explain it to the adults around them. Big emotions often show up as behavior instead of words: meltdowns, withdrawal, defiance, or trouble focusing.

Children’s therapy gives kids tools to understand and manage what they’re experiencing. Common issues our therapists work with include:

  • Anxiety, worry, and fear-based behaviors;
  • ADHD and attention or focus challenges;
  • Behavioral concerns, including tantrums, defiance, and emotional outbursts;
  • Autism spectrum support, including social skills and emotional regulation;
  • Social struggles and difficulty making or keeping friends;
  • Family conflict, divorce, or major life transitions;
  • Grief and loss;
  • Trauma and adverse experiences;
  • Sleep difficulties tied to anxiety or stress;
  • Low self-esteem and negative self-talk.

Therapy gives children a confidential, age-appropriate space to process these experiences, guided by a therapist trained in child development.

Our Approach to Child Therapy

Our therapists use evidence-based approaches adapted to a child’s developmental stage and communication style. Depending on what your child is working through, sessions may draw on:

Child-Centered Play Therapy: Uses play, a child’s natural language, to help them express emotions, work through difficult experiences, and build coping skills in a way that feels safe and developmentally appropriate.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Adapted for children, CBT helps kids recognize the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and learn practical tools to manage anxiety or low mood.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT): A structured, research-backed approach that coaches parents in real time to strengthen the parent-child relationship and reduce disruptive behavior.

Behavioral Therapy: Focuses on reinforcing positive behaviors and reducing challenging ones through consistent, practical strategies that parents can reinforce at home.

Family Involvement: Children don’t exist in isolation, so we work closely with parents and caregivers throughout treatment, adjusting the level of involvement based on the child’s age and needs.

For children who need additional specialized support, such as occupational therapy or Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), we coordinate with outside specialists as part of a comprehensive care plan.

How Do You Know If Your Child Needs Therapy?

It can be hard to know whether what you’re seeing is typical childhood behavior or something that calls for extra support. Parents often wonder if their child is just going through a phase or if professional help would make a difference. Some signs that therapy might help include:

  • Frequent tantrums or emotional outbursts that seem out of proportion;
  • Persistent worry, fear, or avoidance of everyday situations;
  • Trouble focusing, sitting still, or following instructions at school or home;
  • Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities they used to enjoy;
  • Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy without a clear physical cause;
  • Difficulty adjusting to a major change, like a divorce, move, or new sibling;
  • Regression in behaviors they had previously outgrown, like bedwetting or thumb sucking.

Child therapy is fundamental in promoting emotional well-being and healthy development

FAQs

Child therapy is a form of mental health treatment designed specifically for children, typically between the ages of 4 and 12. A licensed therapist works with a child, often through play, conversation, or structured activities, to help them process emotions, build coping skills, and work through challenges like anxiety, behavioral concerns, or family changes.

Most therapists work with children starting around age 3 or 4, once a child has enough language and play skills to engage in sessions. The approach changes significantly by age: younger children benefit most from play-based methods, while older children can engage in more direct, conversation-based work. In New York State, a parent or guardian’s consent is needed for a minor to begin therapy.

For younger children, sessions often look like play, using toys, art, or games as tools for a therapist to understand and help a child process their inner world. Older children may engage in more direct conversation. Parents are usually involved at the start and end of treatment, and at regular check ins, even when a child meets with the therapist alone.

Yes. Anxiety and ADHD are two of the most common reasons children come to therapy. Therapists use approaches like CBT and behavioral therapy to help children recognize anxious thoughts, build focus and self-regulation strategies, and develop tools they can use at school and at home.

Therapy can be a valuable part of a comprehensive support plan for children on the autism spectrum, particularly for building emotional regulation, social skills, and coping strategies. Our therapists work alongside other specialists, such as ABA providers or occupational therapists, when a child’s plan calls for that level of specialized support.

Play therapy uses a child’s natural language, play, to help them express emotions and work through difficult experiences they may not yet have the words to describe. Rather than talking directly about a problem, a child might act it out with toys, art, or games, while a trained therapist helps them process what comes up. It’s especially effective for younger children who aren’t yet able to engage in traditional talk therapy.
