Be prepared to meet the grieving

As mental health clinicians, it is imperative to cultivate a deeper understanding of the different types of loss that exist, the clinical considerations present in loss, the physiological and holistic impact of grief and mourning and increase familiarity with different interventions. Loss is a universal and inevitable experience of the living that has vast ripple effects across all humanity. We experience the deep pain of loss and grief from a variety of life experiences, not solely through death, and some losses can be quite traumatic.

Death is not the only experience leading to grief. We can and do experience the pain of loss and need to grieve a variety of common and usual life experiences and it’s important to understand the nuanced ways that we encounter loss and grief.

When a loss is experienced as traumatic it can lead to a prolonged and complicated experience of grief.

Timeline and inventory of all of the different losses you have experienced over the years. A grief landscape provides you a tangible way to deepen your awareness and appreciation of the loss you have had and it can highlight the areas that may need more focus and work to process through.

When it feels like our worlds have been shattered, we need to pay exquisite attention to the words, pictures and objects that we need in order to rebuild our worlds once again.

Guided Imagery is yet another powerful tool to help externalize hard to name feelings as it can help to move and process through challenging feelings and can be life promoting again, because anything creative is inherently life promoting.

Broaden your definition of grief as an instinctual, emotional and physiological response to loss that has impacts across one’s behavioral, cognitive, social, cultural and spiritual and philosophical aspects of being.

Mourning is the process through which we go through in order to learn how to adapt to a loss.

It is absolutely essential that we fully appreciate our own history of loss, how we have been shaped by these losses as well as the places that scare us about this doing grief work so that we can show up as wholeheartedly and authentically present as possible for those we will meet in their grief.

Learn how to establish a safe foundation for entering into the process of grief work.

Utilizing expressive arts such as drawing, doodling even, painting, exploring music, certain songs and singing, and movement or dancing are essential to healing from grief and loss.

Letter writing is a very effective method for engaging both hemispheres of the brain and for engaging the prefrontal cortex to help filter that emotional content of the limbic system and stored content in our emotional brain.

Many times when we lose someone or we’re going through a loss, we can have some pretty provocative dreams of our deceased loved ones or of what we lost and working with these dreams can be a powerful tool for healing.
